Definition
Water pollution refers to the addition of harmful substances to a water body to levels that cause cause harm to normal aquatic life forms like fish.
WATER POLLUTANTS
1. Hot water from factories.
2. Sewage
3. Gabbage like plastics.
4. Oil spills
EFFECT OF AIR POLLUTANTS
Hot water from factories raises body temperature of aquatic organisms hence denaturing enzyme leading to death also increased water temperature reduces oxygen dissolution leading to anoxic death of organisms.
Sewage contains soap, coliforms, ammonium compounds and water. Coliforms are aerobic they raise the biochemical oxygen demand of the water bodies. Ammonium compounds are oxidised to nitrates that lead to growth of algae causing an algal bloom that limits light penetration to normal aquatic organisms.
Oil spills and gabbage also limit light penetration making productivity of the water bodies low and also movement of organisms difficult.
