During the Ordovician, the animal phyla that first appeared in the fossil record during the Cambrian period would diversify giving rise to several highly diverse groups of animals. This would result in increased competition in the ocean where all living things still resided. Well, almost all living things because during the Ordovician, plants would make their first appearance on land.
